New computer setup
Buying advice before you spend, then the machine set up, your files and accounts moved across and checked, and the old device erased only after you approve it. Tell us what you use the computer for and your budget, and we'll say which specification is enough.
Before you buy
Tell us which applications you use, what needs to improve and your budget, and we'll say which specification is enough. If the cheaper machine is fine for what you do, that is what we'll say. Sometimes the answer is a new drive and more memory in the current machine rather than a replacement. See computer and laptop repair.
If replacing is the right call, we'll tell you what to buy and what to skip. You can buy it yourself or ask us for a quote. The advice is the same either way. The computers we supply to offices are Lenovo, and a home machine is quoted the same way.
Setup
A new machine starts with a setup process designed to sign you up for things. We go through it screen by screen, turn off what you don't want, and apply updates before you start using it.
- Windows or macOS set up with your account, updates applied first
- Preinstalled trial software and its reminders removed
- Email set up in the app you prefer, on the computer and on your phone
- Printer, scanner and WiFi connected and tested
- The software you actually use installed and signed in
- Backup turned on before you fill the machine up, not after. See backup and file recovery
Files and accounts
We agree which files, email accounts, bookmarks and programs move. Software licenses and the condition of the old device decide what can be transferred, and we say which before starting.
We check the agreed transfer with you on the new computer. The old device stays intact until you confirm the transfer and approve any erasure.
The old machine
Deleting files or resetting a device can leave recoverable data. Once you've confirmed the transfer, we erase the old drive properly, check the result, sign it out of your accounts, and advise on reuse or recycling.
Pricing
A diagnostic first if you want the old machine assessed, then a written quote for the setup and the move. Nothing starts until you approve it. Rates are on the pricing page.
Buying advice on its own is a short conversation. Call or email with what you use the computer for.
