Computer and laptop repair, done straight.
We charge a flat $85 to find out what's wrong. Then you get the price of the fix in writing, and you decide. If the machine isn't worth repairing, we'll tell you that instead of selling you a repair.
The problems we see most
Most machines that land on the bench have one of a handful of faults. We've seen all of them enough times to know where to look first.
- Machines that have gotten slow over years, usually a dying drive, a full drive, too much startup software, or a fan choked with dust
- Laptops that won't boot, stop at a logo, or drop into a repair loop
- Windows or macOS updates that failed halfway and left the machine unusable
- Hardware faults: failing drives, bad memory, dead batteries, charging ports, screens, keyboards, and fans
- Overheating and shutdowns under load
- Machines that work but are full of things you didn't install. That's usually a cleanup job, and it's covered on our virus and malware removal page
Diagnostic first, price second, work third
We start with the $85 diagnostic. That covers testing the machine and working out what has actually failed, which is often not what the symptom suggests. A laptop that won't charge is sometimes a battery and sometimes a board fault, and those are very different bills.
Once we know, you get the cost of the repair in writing before we open anything up or order a part. No work happens without your approval. If you decide not to go ahead, you've paid $85 and you know exactly what's wrong with your machine, which is useful information to have.
We back up your data before we touch a failing drive wherever the drive still lets us. If the drive is already in trouble, read data backup and recovery for what we can and can't get back.
When we tell you to replace it
A repair is worth doing when the machine has years left in it and the fix is cheaper than the years. A seven-year-old laptop with a failing drive, a swollen battery, and an OS the vendor no longer supports is not that machine. We'll say so, and we won't charge you to find out twice.
If replacing is the right call, we'll tell you what to buy and what to skip, and we don't sell you the machine, so there's nothing behind the advice. See new computer setup for how we handle the move to a new one.
Remote, at your house, or we take it away
We can usually handle software faults, failed updates, and slow machines remotely, with you watching the screen the whole time. Anything that needs hands on the hardware, we come to you in Columbus, Bexley, and around Franklin County.
For bench work like a drive swap or a teardown clean, we collect the machine, do the work, and bring it back set up the way you had it. You'll know which of the three we're proposing before you agree to anything.
If you'd rather have all of this looked after on an ongoing basis by someone who already knows your setup, that's our home tech support service.
What it costs
- Flat $85 diagnostic. We find the fault, then quote the fix in writing. No work happens without your approval
- Approved work is $85 per hour, remote or on-site
- Rush and after-hours work adds a flat $85
- We quote parts with the repair, so the written number is the number
- We quote larger projects in writing before we start
If it's not worth fixing, we say so, and the $85 is all you spend. See full pricing.
